The Congregation, Friday · Medinan · 11 verses · Revelation order 110
الجمعة
It is derived from the sentence idha nudiya-lis-salat-imin-yaum-il- Jumu'ati of verse 9. Although in this Surah injunctions about the Friday congregational Prayer also have been given, yet 'Jumu'ah' is not the title of its subject-matter as a whole, but this name too, like the names of other Surahs, is only a symbolic title.
It is He who has sent among the unlettered [Arabs] a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and wisdom [i.e., the sunnah] - although they were before in clear error -
Wahiduddin Khan
It is He who has raised among the unlettered people a messenger from among themselves who recites His revelations to them, and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom, for they had formerly been clearly misguided
Shabbir Ahmed
He it is Who has sent a Messenger among those who had never before received a Scripture - to convey unto them His Messages, and to make them grow in humanity, and to instruct them in the Scripture (as it is being revealed) and Wisdom, Judgment and establishment of Allah's Rule on earth. Whereas before that they were obviously lost in error
That is the bounty of Allāh, which He gives to whom He wills, and Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
Wahiduddin Khan
That is God's grace; He bestows it on whom He pleases; for God is limitless in His grace
Shabbir Ahmed
Such is Allah's Bounty - which He bestows upon him who is willing to receive it. (His Light is available to whoever turns it on). For, Allah is the Lord of Great Bounty
The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allāh. And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Wahiduddin Khan
Those who were charged with bearing the Torah, but did not do so are like an ass carrying a load of books. How unfortunate are those who belie the sign of God. God does not guide the wrongdoers
Shabbir Ahmed
(The Book of Allah is to be read and understood, and not placed in high niches.) The example of those who were entrusted with Torah, and did not apply it in their daily lives, is that of the donkey that carries a load of books. Tough indeed is the example of people who deny Allah's Verses by their actions. Allah does not show the Way to people who displace the Revelation from its rightful station. ('Kizb' = Belie = Give lie = Deny in practice. 'Kufr' = Reject openly = Darkness = Denial = Ingratitude. 'Zulm' = Dislodge from the rightful place = Relegate the Truth = Give preference to other sources = Oppression = Wrongdoing = Violation of human rights)
Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allāh, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."
Wahiduddin Khan
Say, "You who are Jews, if you claim that you are favoured by God out of all people, then long for death, if you are truthful
Shabbir Ahmed
Say, "O' You who follow the Jewish faith! If you claim that you are friends of Allah to the exclusion of the rest of mankind, then long for death if you are truthful
Say, "Indeed, the death from which you flee - indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you used to do."
Wahiduddin Khan
So say, "The death you run away from will certainly meet you, and thereafter you will be brought back to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will declare to you what you have done
Shabbir Ahmed
Say, "Behold, the death from which you shrink so much is bound to overtake you, and then you will be returned to the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible. And then He will inform you of what you truly accomplished
O you who have believed, when [the adhān] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumuʿah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allāh and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
Wahiduddin Khan
Believers! When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hasten to the remembrance of God, and leave all worldly commerce: this is for your own good, if you but knew it
Shabbir Ahmed
O You who have chosen to be graced with belief! When the prayer is announced on the Day of the Congregation, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave your commerce. That is for your own good if you use your knowledge to understand
But [on one occasion] when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muḥammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allāh is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allāh is the best of providers."
Wahiduddin Khan
Yet when they see some merchandise or entertainment, they break away to go to it and leave you standing. Say, "That which God has in store is far better than any merchandise or entertainment." God is the most munificent Giver
Shabbir Ahmed
Yet when they see some bargain or entertainment, they rush to it, and leave you standing. Say, "That which is with Allah is better than all entertainment and all bargain. And Allah is the Best of providers
