104. Al-Humazah

الهمزة

The Surah takes its name from the word humazah occurring in the first verse.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

104:1

وَيۡلࣱ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةࣲ لُّمَزَةٍ

Saheeh International

Woe to every scorner and mocker

Wahiduddin Khan

Woe to every fault-finding back-biter

Shabbir Ahmed

Woe unto every slanderer, fault-finder! (He himself does little but spends a lot of energy detracting the doers)

104:2

ٱلَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالࣰ ا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ

Saheeh International

Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it.

Wahiduddin Khan

who amasses wealth, counting it over

Shabbir Ahmed

Whose efforts revolve around gathering material possessions and counting them. (Devoid of a higher goal, he opposes any semblance of reform)

104:3

يَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخۡلَدَهُۥ

Saheeh International

He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

Wahiduddin Khan

thinking that his wealth will make him live forever

Shabbir Ahmed

Thinking as if his wealth will help him for forever

104:4

كَلَّاۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِي ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ

Saheeh International

No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.

Wahiduddin Khan

By no means! He shall surely be cast into the crushing torment

Nay, he will be flung into the Shredder

104:5

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحُطَمَةُ

Saheeh International

And what can make you know what is the Crusher?

Wahiduddin Khan

Would that you understood what that crushing torment is like

Ah, what will convey to you what the Shredder is

104:6

نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُوقَدَةُ

Saheeh International

It is the fire of Allāh, [eternally] fueled,

It is a Fire kindled by God

A Fire kindled by Allah

104:7

ٱلَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةِ

Saheeh International

Which mounts directed at the hearts.

Wahiduddin Khan

Reaching right into the hearts of men

Shabbir Ahmed

Which originates in the hearts. (And engulfs the hearts)

104:8

إِنَّهَا عَلَيۡهِم مُّؤۡصَدَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, it [i.e., Hellfire] will be closed down upon them

Wahiduddin Khan

it closes in on them from every side

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, it closes upon them. (As they had kept their possessions closed in safes and vaults, and kept all kindness surrounded in the flames of jealousy)

104:9

فِي عَمَدࣲ مُّمَدَّدَةِۭ

Saheeh International
