37. As-Saffat

Those who set the Ranks · Meccan · 182 verses · Revelation order 56

The name is derived from the word was saaffat with which the Surah begins.

37:1

Saheeh International

By those [angels] lined up in rows

Wahiduddin Khan

By those [angels] who range themselves in close ranks

Shabbir Ahmed

Those vanguards who set up ranks (in order to defend the Divine System)

37:2

Saheeh International

And those who drive [the clouds]

Wahiduddin Khan

and those who drive away [the wicked] with reproof

Shabbir Ahmed

And those officers of the state who help maintain law and order

37:3

Saheeh International

And those who recite the message,

Wahiduddin Khan

and by the reciters of the Reminder

Shabbir Ahmed

And those believers who convey the Reminder

37:4

Saheeh International

Indeed, your God is One,

Wahiduddin Khan

your God is One

Shabbir Ahmed

(Are the living witnesses that) - Verily, most surely, your God is One

37:5

Saheeh International

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.

Wahiduddin Khan

Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them; Lord of the Easts

Shabbir Ahmed

He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything that is between them (the intergalactic material) - And the Lord of the sunrises (and of the Light-giving Revelation)

37:6

Saheeh International

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

Wahiduddin Khan

We have adorned the lowest heaven with the beauty of the planets

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, We have beautified the lowest heaven nearest to the earth with ornaments, the stars and planets

37:7

Saheeh International

And as protection against every rebellious devil

Wahiduddin Khan

and guarded it against all rebellious devils

Shabbir Ahmed

And made them secure against every satanic force (The Revelation brings an end to the false claims of the fortune-telling astrologers)

37:8

Saheeh International

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,

Wahiduddin Khan

they cannot overhear the Higher Assembly for they are pelted from every side

Shabbir Ahmed

Repelled faraway from the Truth, the 'occult sciences' despite their boisterous claims, can get not a hint of what Divine Revelation is

37:9

Saheeh International

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

Wahiduddin Khan

driven away, and will suffer eternal punishment

Shabbir Ahmed

Outcast--and theirs is a lasting torment

37:10

Saheeh International

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

Wahiduddin Khan

But if anyone does succeed in snatching a glimpse [of such knowledge], he shall be pursued by a piercing flame

Shabbir Ahmed

Even if a thing of their conjecture comes to pass, they are pursued by a Flame of Brightness. (The Divine Revelation exposes the claimants to the 'occult sciences' (18:22), (26:210-212), (52:38), (67:)

37:11

Saheeh International

Then inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created them [i.e., men] from sticky clay.

Wahiduddin Khan

So, ask those who deny the truth if it was harder to create them than all the other things We have created? We created them from sticky clay

Shabbir Ahmed

And ask them to enlighten you, "What is more difficult and stronger - their creation or the rest of Our creation in the multiform Universe? Them (the humans) We have only created out of a sticky clay

37:12

Saheeh International

But you wonder, while they mock,

Wahiduddin Khan

No wonder you are surprised as they laugh with scorn

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, but whereas you (O Prophet) marvel at the Universe, they mock - and again you marvel at their mocking

37:13

Saheeh International

And when they are reminded, they remember not.

Wahiduddin Khan

When they are reminded, they do not pay heed

Shabbir Ahmed

They take not to heart the wonders of Nature when reminded

37:14

Saheeh International

And when they see a sign, they ridicule.

Wahiduddin Khan

and whenever they see some sign, they ridicule it

Shabbir Ahmed

And they turn to mockery every Wonder that they see

37:15

Saheeh International

And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

Wahiduddin Khan

saying, "This is plain sorcery

Shabbir Ahmed

And of the Revelation they say, "This is nothing but magical eloquence

37:16

Saheeh International

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

Wahiduddin Khan

What! When we have died and become dust and bones, will we be brought back to life again

Shabbir Ahmed

What! When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised again

37:17

Saheeh International

And our forefathers [as well]?"

Wahiduddin Khan

along with our forefathers

Shabbir Ahmed

And even our forefathers

37:18

Saheeh International

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."

Wahiduddin Khan

Say, "Yes indeed, and you will be brought low

Shabbir Ahmed

Say, "Yes, indeed. And you will be brought low

37:19

Saheeh International

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

Wahiduddin Khan

There will be but a single blast and then their eyes will open

Shabbir Ahmed

There will be a single Rebuke, and then, behold, they will begin to see

37:20

Saheeh International

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

Wahiduddin Khan

They will say, "Woe to us! This is the Day of Reckoning

Shabbir Ahmed

And they will say, "Oh, woe unto us! This is the Day of Judgment

37:21

Saheeh International

[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

Wahiduddin Khan

[It will be said], "This is the Day of Judgement which you have been denying

Shabbir Ahmed

Yes - This is the Day of Decision you used to deny

37:22

Saheeh International

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship

Wahiduddin Khan

But We shall say, "Assemble those who did wrong together with their associates and what they worshipped

Shabbir Ahmed

Bring you up", it will be said, "The transgressors and their companions and the leaders whom they obeyed

37:23

Saheeh International

Other than Allāh, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

Wahiduddin Khan

besides God, and lead them to the path of the Fire

Shabbir Ahmed

Instead of Allah, and lead them onto the path to the Blazing Fire. ('Azwaj' in 37:22 = Companions)

37:24

Saheeh International

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

Wahiduddin Khan

and stop them there for questioning

Shabbir Ahmed

Halt them! For, they must be questioned

37:25

Saheeh International

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

Wahiduddin Khan

But what is the matter with you that you cannot help one another

Shabbir Ahmed

What is the matter with you that you help not each other

37:26

Saheeh International

But they, that Day, are in surrender.

Wahiduddin Khan

indeed, on that Day they will surrender themselves

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, but this Day they make full submission

37:27

Saheeh International

And they will approach one another asking [i.e., blaming] each other.

Wahiduddin Khan

They will turn upon one another, and question one another

Shabbir Ahmed

And they will turn to one another asking, demanding

37:28

Saheeh International

They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."

Wahiduddin Khan

They will say, "You used to come at us from the right

Shabbir Ahmed

Some will say, "You used to approach us in power

37:29

Saheeh International

They [i.e., the oppressors] will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

Wahiduddin Khan

They will say, "No! It was you who would not believe

Shabbir Ahmed

The leaders will reply, "Nay, it were you yourself who were devoid of Faith

37:30

Saheeh International

And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

Wahiduddin Khan

we had no power over you; but you yourselves were a rebellious people

Shabbir Ahmed

And we had no power at all over you. Nay, you were a people of unrestrained conduct

37:31

Saheeh International

So the word [i.e., decree] of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

Wahiduddin Khan

But now our Lord's word has come true against us: truly, we are bound to taste [the punishment]

Shabbir Ahmed

But now the Word of our Lord has come to pass about all of us. Verily, we are bound to taste the fruit of our deeds

37:32

Saheeh International

And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

Wahiduddin Khan

We led you astray as we were ourselves astray

Shabbir Ahmed

So then, if we misled you, behold, we ourselves were astray

37:33

Saheeh International

So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

Wahiduddin Khan

On that Day they will all share the punishment

Shabbir Ahmed

And on that Day, verily, they will be partners in a common doom. (14:21), (33:67), (3)

37:34

Saheeh International

Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

Wahiduddin Khan

that is how We deal with evil-doers

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, this is how We deal with the guilty

37:35

Saheeh International

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allāh," were arrogant

Wahiduddin Khan

When they were told, "There is no deity but God," they turned away with disdain

Shabbir Ahmed

For when it was said to them, "There is no god but Allah", they showed arrogance

37:36

Saheeh International

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

Wahiduddin Khan

and replied, "Shall we then give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet

Shabbir Ahmed

And used to say, "Shall we give up our gods for a mad poet

37:37

Saheeh International

Rather, he [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

Wahiduddin Khan

Surely, he has brought the truth, confirming those who were sent before

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed the previous Messengers

37:38

Saheeh International

Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

Wahiduddin Khan

you shall surely taste the painful punishment

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, you will indeed taste the grievous suffering

37:39

Saheeh International

And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

Wahiduddin Khan

and be rewarded only according to your deeds

Shabbir Ahmed

And you are requited only for what you have done

37:40

Saheeh International

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

Wahiduddin Khan

But the chosen servants of God

Shabbir Ahmed

But the sincere servants of Allah

37:41

Saheeh International

Those will have a provision determined -

Wahiduddin Khan

shall have a known provision

Shabbir Ahmed

Theirs shall be a sustenance known to them

37:42

Saheeh International

Fruits; and they will be honored

Wahiduddin Khan

fruits of various kinds; and they shall be honoured

Shabbir Ahmed

As the fruits of their labor, and they shall be honored

37:43

Saheeh International

In gardens of pleasure

Wahiduddin Khan

in the Gardens of Bliss

Shabbir Ahmed

In the Gardens of Delight

37:44

Saheeh International

On thrones facing one another.

Wahiduddin Khan

seated on couches, facing one another

Shabbir Ahmed

Facing one another upon thrones of happiness

37:45

Saheeh International

There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

Wahiduddin Khan

A drink will be passed round among them from a flowing spring

Shabbir Ahmed

A cup from a gushing spring of Bliss brought around for them

37:46

Saheeh International

White and delicious to the drinkers;

Wahiduddin Khan

white and delicious to those who drink it

Shabbir Ahmed

Crystal clear, delicious to those who drink

37:47

Saheeh International

No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

Wahiduddin Khan

causing no headiness or intoxication

Shabbir Ahmed

No headache or hangover in it, nor will they get drunk

37:48

Saheeh International

And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes,

Wahiduddin Khan

With them will be spouses, modest of gaze and beautiful of eye

Shabbir Ahmed

And in their company will be mates of modest gaze, endowed with vision

37:49

Saheeh International

As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

Wahiduddin Khan

like closely guarded pearls

Shabbir Ahmed

Faultless like the hidden ostrich eggs (of unblemished character)

37:50

Saheeh International

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

Wahiduddin Khan

They will turn to one another with questions

Shabbir Ahmed

And they will all turn to one another asking (socializing)

37:51

Saheeh International

A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth].

Wahiduddin Khan

one of them will say, "I had a friend

Shabbir Ahmed

One of them speaks thus, "Behold, I had a close companion

37:52

Saheeh International

Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

Wahiduddin Khan

who used to ask, 'Do you really believe that

Shabbir Ahmed

He used to ask me, "What! Are you of those who affirm

37:53

Saheeh International

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

Wahiduddin Khan

after we die and become dust and bones, we shall be brought to judgement

Shabbir Ahmed

That after we have died and become mere dust and bones, we will be called to account

37:54

Saheeh International

He will say, "Would you [care to] look?"

Wahiduddin Khan

Then he will say, "Shall we look for him

Shabbir Ahmed

A voice will be heard, "Will you people like to look at him

37:55

Saheeh International

And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire.

Wahiduddin Khan

Then he will look and see him in the midst of the Fire

Shabbir Ahmed

And then he looks and finds his companion in the midst of the blazing fire

37:56

Saheeh International

He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.

Wahiduddin Khan

He will say, "By God! You almost brought me to ruin

Shabbir Ahmed

He says to the companion in the fire, "By God! You had almost ruined me too

37:57

Saheeh International

If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

Wahiduddin Khan

If it had not been for the blessing of my Lord, I would also have been taken to Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

Had I not earned the blessing of my Lord, I would surely be of those given over to punishment

37:58

Saheeh International

Then, are we not to die

Wahiduddin Khan

Then he will say [to his blessed companions], "Are we not going to die

Shabbir Ahmed

Are we then never to die (O My Companions of Paradise)

37:59

Saheeh International

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

Wahiduddin Khan

except for our first death? Are we not going to be punished

Shabbir Ahmed

After our former death, and that we will never be among the suffering

37:60

Saheeh International

Indeed, this is the great attainment.

Wahiduddin Khan

Truly, this is a great victory

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, this - this indeed, is the Supreme Triumph

37:61

Saheeh International

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

Wahiduddin Khan

It is for the like of this that all should strive

Shabbir Ahmed

For such an end should work all workers

37:62

Saheeh International

Is that [i.e., Paradise] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?

Wahiduddin Khan

Is that better by way of hospitality or the Zaqqum tree

Shabbir Ahmed

Is this better as a welcome or the inedible cactus (the bitter tree of harming others (17:60), (44: 43)

37:63

Saheeh International

Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

Wahiduddin Khan

which We have made as a test for the wrongdoers

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, We have appointed it a torment for the oppressors

37:64

Saheeh International

Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

Wahiduddin Khan

For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hellfire

Shabbir Ahmed

For, behold, it is a tree that springs in the heart of the blazing Fire. (Harming others, oppression and violation of human rights build one's own Hellfire. Likewise, humans earn Paradise with their own hands (7:42), (16:32), (17:9), (29:55), (4)

37:65

Saheeh International

Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

Wahiduddin Khan

and its fruits are like devils' heads

Shabbir Ahmed

Its growth like cobra heads. ('Shaitan' and 'Jaann' = Serpent, Cobra. (38:41-44), Harming others harms one's own 'Self

37:66

Saheeh International

And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

Wahiduddin Khan

They will eat from it and fill their bellies with it

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, from it they must eat, and fill their bellies with it

37:67

Saheeh International

Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

Wahiduddin Khan

then in addition to it they shall have a draught of boiling water to drink

Shabbir Ahmed

And, behold, above all this they have a drink of burning despair

37:68

Saheeh International

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

Wahiduddin Khan

then surely they shall return to Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

And once again, verily, the blazing Fire is their destination

37:69

Saheeh International

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

Wahiduddin Khan

They found their fathers had gone astray

Shabbir Ahmed

For, verily, they had found their fathers on the wrong path

37:70

Saheeh International

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

Wahiduddin Khan

so they are rushing to follow in their footsteps

Shabbir Ahmed

But they made haste to follow their footprints

37:71

Saheeh International

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

Wahiduddin Khan

And assuredly many of the ancients went astray before them

Shabbir Ahmed

This is how, indeed, most of the people of the old had gone astray before them

37:72

Saheeh International

And We had already sent among them warners.

Wahiduddin Khan

though We had sent warners among them

Shabbir Ahmed

And verily, We had sent Warners among them

37:73

Saheeh International

Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

Wahiduddin Khan

See how those who were warned met their end

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, then, what happened to those who had been warned

37:74

Saheeh International

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

Wahiduddin Khan

Not so the chosen servants of God

Shabbir Ahmed

Except for the sincere servants of Allah

37:75

Saheeh International

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

Wahiduddin Khan

Noah cried to Us, and how excellent was Our response

Shabbir Ahmed

And it was so when Noah cried to Us. Behold, how excellent are We as Responder

37:76

Saheeh International

And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

Wahiduddin Khan

We saved him and his people from great distress

Shabbir Ahmed

For, We saved him, his family and his followers from the great distress. ('Ahl' or the Household of a Prophet includes his followers)

37:77

Saheeh International

And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

Wahiduddin Khan

and We made his offspring the only survivors

Shabbir Ahmed

And made his progeny and followers survive

37:78

Saheeh International

And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wahiduddin Khan

We left mention of him among later generations

Shabbir Ahmed

And We left his remembrance for later generations

37:79

Saheeh International

"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

Wahiduddin Khan

Peace be upon Noah among all the peoples

Shabbir Ahmed

Peace and salutation to Noah in the Worlds

37:80

Saheeh International

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Wahiduddin Khan

That is how We recompense the righteous

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, this is how We reward the benefactors of humanity

37:81

Saheeh International

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Wahiduddin Khan

he was truly one of Our faithful servants

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, he was one of Our truly believing servants

37:82

Saheeh International

Then We drowned the others [i.e., disbelievers].

Wahiduddin Khan

We drowned the rest

Shabbir Ahmed

And We caused the others to drown

37:83

Saheeh International

And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

Wahiduddin Khan

Abraham was of the same faith

Shabbir Ahmed

And verily, to his group (of believers, later) belonged Abraham

37:84

Saheeh International

When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

Wahiduddin Khan

he came to his Lord with a sound heart

Shabbir Ahmed

When he came to his Lord with a noble heart

37:85

Saheeh International

[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

Wahiduddin Khan

Behold!" he said to his father and to his people, "What are these that you worship

Shabbir Ahmed

And thus spoke to his father and his people, "What is that you worship

37:86

Saheeh International

Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allāh you desire?

Wahiduddin Khan

Would you serve false deities instead of God

Shabbir Ahmed

It is a falsehood. Do you desire gods besides Allah

37:87

Saheeh International

Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

Wahiduddin Khan

What do you think of the Lord of the Worlds

Shabbir Ahmed

What do you think of the Lord of the Worlds

37:88

Saheeh International

And he cast a look at the stars.

Wahiduddin Khan

He looked up at the stars

Shabbir Ahmed

And he glanced at the stars

37:89

Saheeh International

And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."

Wahiduddin Khan

And said, "I am sick

Shabbir Ahmed

And said, "Behold, I am sick (of you worshiping false deities)

37:90

Saheeh International

So they turned away from him, departing.

Wahiduddin Khan

so they turned their backs on him and went off

Shabbir Ahmed

At that they turned their backs and went away from him

37:91

Saheeh International

Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?

Wahiduddin Khan

He turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat

Shabbir Ahmed

Then Abraham gently turned to their idols and said, "What! You do not eat

37:92

Saheeh International

What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?".

Wahiduddin Khan

What is the matter with you that you do not speak

Shabbir Ahmed

What ails you that you speak not

37:93

Saheeh International

And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

Wahiduddin Khan

then he turned on them, striking them down with his right hand

Shabbir Ahmed

Then he turned upon them, striking them with the right hand (struck them hard)

37:94

Saheeh International

Then they [i.e., the people] came toward him, hastening.

Wahiduddin Khan

His people came rushing towards him

Shabbir Ahmed

The people came running to him

37:95

Saheeh International

He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

Wahiduddin Khan

but he said, "How can you worship things you carve with your own hands

Shabbir Ahmed

He said, "Do you worship that which you carve with your own hands

37:96

Saheeh International

While Allāh created you and that which you do?"

Wahiduddin Khan

when it is God who has created you and all your handiwork

Shabbir Ahmed

When Allah has created you and your handicraft

37:97

Saheeh International

They said, "Construct for him a structure [i.e., furnace] and throw him into the burning fire."

Wahiduddin Khan

They said, "Build a pyre for him and throw him into the blaze

Shabbir Ahmed

They said, "Build a structure for him and fling him into the blazing fire

37:98

Saheeh International

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.

Wahiduddin Khan

They wanted to harm him, but We humiliated them all

Shabbir Ahmed

But as they schemed against him, We brought them low

37:99

Saheeh International

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

Wahiduddin Khan

He said, "I will go to my Lord: He is sure to guide me

Shabbir Ahmed

And he said, "Behold, I am going to my Lord Who will guide me (to refuge)

37:100

Saheeh International

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."

Wahiduddin Khan

Lord, grant me a righteous son

Shabbir Ahmed

(Abraham emigrated to Syria and prayed), "My Lord! Grant me the company of the righteous, and children who will be righteous

37:101

Saheeh International

So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

Wahiduddin Khan

We gave him the good news that he would have a patient, forbearing son

Shabbir Ahmed

So We gave him the good news of a clement son (Ishmael)

37:102

Saheeh International

And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."

Wahiduddin Khan

And when he reached the age when he could work with him, he said, "O my son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. So tell me what you think of it!" He replied, "O my father, do as you are commanded; and God willing, you will find me steadfast

Shabbir Ahmed

And when he was old enough to strive along with him, Abraham said, "O My dear son! I have a vision that I must give you to a life of test and tribulation for a Noble cause (37:107). So look, what do you think?" He said, "O My father! Do what you are commanded. God willing, you will find me of the steadfast." ('Zibh' & 'Zabh' = Sacrifice = Disregard comfort for a Noble cause. Just as 'Qatl' = Killing, fighting, humiliating, to bring low)

37:103

Saheeh International

And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,

Wahiduddin Khan

When they had both submitted to God, and he had laid his son down on his face

Shabbir Ahmed

As both of them had surrendered themselves (to Allah), he made Ishmael prostrate on his forehead in gratitude. (Contrary to popular tradition Abraham never envisioned or intended to slaughter his son)

37:104

Saheeh International

We called to him, "O Abraham,

Wahiduddin Khan

We called out to him, "Abraham

Shabbir Ahmed

We called unto him, "O Abraham

37:105

Saheeh International

You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Wahiduddin Khan

you have fulfilled the dream." It is thus indeed that We reward those who do good

Shabbir Ahmed

You have already affirmed the vision. We - This is so - We must reward the doers of good

37:106

Saheeh International

Indeed, this was the clear trial.

Wahiduddin Khan

that surely was a manifest trial

Shabbir Ahmed

This was indeed a Trial, clear in itself. (Leaving the prestigious office of Chief Priesthood in Babylon and now the comfort of Syria for the wilderness of Makkah)

37:107

Saheeh International

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,

Wahiduddin Khan

We ransomed him with a great sacrifice

Shabbir Ahmed

We exchanged his life for a Momentous Sacrifice. (Please notice here the absence of the Biblical and the traditional myth of a 'ram' sent from the heavens. Also, note that slaughtering of a sheep or goat, by no means, can be considered a Momentous Sacrifice. (14)

37:108

Saheeh International

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wahiduddin Khan

and left him thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among later generations

Shabbir Ahmed

And We left for him remembrance among the later generations

37:109

Saheeh International

"Peace upon Abraham."

Wahiduddin Khan

Peace and salutation to Abraham

Shabbir Ahmed

Peace and salutation to Abraham

37:110

Saheeh International

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Wahiduddin Khan

That is how We recompense the righteous

Shabbir Ahmed

Thus do We reward the benefactors of humanity

37:111

Saheeh International

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Wahiduddin Khan

truly, he was one of Our faithful servants

Shabbir Ahmed

He was one of Our truly believing servants

37:112

Saheeh International

And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

Wahiduddin Khan

We gave Abraham the good news of Isaac, a prophet and a righteous man

Shabbir Ahmed

Then We gave him the good news of Isaac - a Prophet, among men of quality

37:113

Saheeh International

And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].

Wahiduddin Khan

and blessed him and Isaac too: some of their offspring were good, but some clearly sinned against their souls

Shabbir Ahmed

And We gave lasting felicity to him and Isaac. But among their generations are the doers of good, and those who, by doing wrong to others, clearly wrong their own "Self

37:114

Saheeh International

And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

Wahiduddin Khan

We also bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron

Shabbir Ahmed

Yes indeed, We bestowed excellence upon Moses and Aaron

37:115

Saheeh International

And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

Wahiduddin Khan

We saved them and their people from great distress

Shabbir Ahmed

And We saved them and their people from the awesome distress (of bondage)

37:116

Saheeh International

And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

Wahiduddin Khan

and We helped them, so that they were victorious

Shabbir Ahmed

And helped them so that they became the victors

37:117

Saheeh International

And We gave them the explicit Scripture [i.e., the Torah],

Wahiduddin Khan

and We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear

Shabbir Ahmed

And We gave both of them the Scripture that helped to distinguish the right from wrong. ('Kitabal Mustabeen' = the Book that helped to distinguish = The Torah. 'Kitabil Mubin' = The Book that distinguishes = The Qur'an)

37:118

Saheeh International

And We guided them on the straight path.

Wahiduddin Khan

and guided them to the straight path

Shabbir Ahmed

And showed both of them the Straight Path

37:119

Saheeh International

And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wahiduddin Khan

and We left them thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among later generations

Shabbir Ahmed

And We left for them remembrance among the later generations

37:120

Saheeh International

"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."

Wahiduddin Khan

Peace be upon Moses and Aaron

Shabbir Ahmed

Peace and salutation to Moses and Aaron

37:121

Saheeh International

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Wahiduddin Khan

This is how We reward those who do good

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily! This is how We reward the benefactors of humanity

37:122

Saheeh International

Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

Wahiduddin Khan

truly they were among Our faithful servants

Shabbir Ahmed

Indeed, both of them were Our truly believing servants

37:123

Saheeh International

And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

Wahiduddin Khan

Elijah too was one of the messengers

Shabbir Ahmed

And, behold, Elias (Elijah) was one of Our Messengers

37:124

Saheeh International

When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?

Wahiduddin Khan

He said to his people, "Have you no fear [of God]

Shabbir Ahmed

When he said to his people, "Will you not walk aright

37:125

Saheeh International

Do you call upon Baʿl and leave the best of creators -

Wahiduddin Khan

Do you call on Baal and abandon the Best of Creators

Shabbir Ahmed

You call upon Ba'l, and disregard the Best of creators

37:126

Saheeh International

Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"

Wahiduddin Khan

God your Lord and Lord of your forefathers

Shabbir Ahmed

Allah! Your Lord, and Lord of your forefathers

37:127

Saheeh International

And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],

Wahiduddin Khan

but they rejected him, and thus will certainly be called to account

Shabbir Ahmed

But they denied him. And they will certainly be called to account

37:128

Saheeh International

Except the chosen servants of Allāh.

Wahiduddin Khan

except the chosen servants of God

Shabbir Ahmed

But the sincere servants of Allah

37:129

Saheeh International

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wahiduddin Khan

We left him thus to be succeeded by a group [of followers] among the following generations

Shabbir Ahmed

And we left for him remembrance among the later generations

37:130

Saheeh International

"Peace upon Elias."

Wahiduddin Khan

Peace be on Elijah and his people

Shabbir Ahmed

Peace and salutation to Elias

37:131

Saheeh International

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Wahiduddin Khan

It is thus indeed that We reward those who do good

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, this is how we reward the benefactors of humanity

37:132

Saheeh International

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Wahiduddin Khan

surely he was one of Our believing servants

Shabbir Ahmed

Indeed, He was among our truly believing servants

37:133

Saheeh International

And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

Wahiduddin Khan

Lot was also one of the messengers

Shabbir Ahmed

And, behold, Lot was indeed among the Messengers

37:134

Saheeh International

[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,

Wahiduddin Khan

We saved him and all his people

Shabbir Ahmed

When We saved him and his household, everyone

37:135

Saheeh International

Except an old woman [i.e., his wife] among those who remained [with the evildoers].

Wahiduddin Khan

except for an old woman who stayed behind

Shabbir Ahmed

Except an old woman who was among those who stayed behind in belief

37:136

Saheeh International

Then We destroyed the others.

Wahiduddin Khan

and We destroyed the rest

Shabbir Ahmed

And then We destroyed the rest

37:137

Saheeh International

And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

Wahiduddin Khan

You pass by their ruins morning

Shabbir Ahmed

And verily, you pass by their sites by day

37:138

Saheeh International

And at night. Then will you not use reason?

Wahiduddin Khan

and night: will you not take heed

Shabbir Ahmed

And by night. Will you not, then, use your sense to draw lessons

37:139

Saheeh International

And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

Wahiduddin Khan

Jonah too was one of the messengers

Shabbir Ahmed

And, behold, Jonah was indeed among the Messengers

37:140

Saheeh International

[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

Wahiduddin Khan

He fled to the overloaded ship

Shabbir Ahmed

When he fled like a runaway slave onto a laden ship. ('Abaqa' = Fled like a runaway slave. He migrated before Allah's Command)

37:141

Saheeh International

And he drew lots and was among the losers.

Wahiduddin Khan

And then they cast lots and he was the one who lost

Shabbir Ahmed

He had cast an arrow and missed the mark. (Untimely action)

37:142

Saheeh International

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.

Wahiduddin Khan

and the fish swallowed him while he was blaming himself

Shabbir Ahmed

Then the Fish grabbed him while he was blaming himself. (Again, usually a whale is mentioned here. But the whale is a mammal and not a fish, and the Qur'an which is never inaccurate, speaks of)

37:143

Saheeh International

And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,

Wahiduddin Khan

Had he not been one of those who acknowledge the glory of God

Shabbir Ahmed

And had he not been a valiant swimmer

37:144

Saheeh International

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.

Wahiduddin Khan

he would certainly have remained inside the fish till the Day of Resurrection

Shabbir Ahmed

(The fish would have eaten him up and) he would have remained in her belly disintegrated there and further until the Day of Rising

37:145

Saheeh International

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

Wahiduddin Khan

But We caused him to be cast forth on to the beach, sick as he was

Shabbir Ahmed

(He freed himself and swam to safety.) Then We cast him on the shore, while he was exhausted

37:146

Saheeh International

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.

Wahiduddin Khan

and We caused a gourd tree to grow over him

Shabbir Ahmed

We caused him to rest under a well-grown fruitful tree

37:147

Saheeh International

And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

Wahiduddin Khan

We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more

Shabbir Ahmed

And We sent him back to his people, a hundred thousand, even more

37:148

Saheeh International

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

Wahiduddin Khan

and they believed in him: so We let them live in ease for a while

Shabbir Ahmed

And this time they believed in him and so We let them enjoy this life

37:149

Saheeh International

So inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?

Wahiduddin Khan

Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons

Shabbir Ahmed

Now (O Prophet) ask them if your Lord has daughters whereas they have sons! (Do they wish to live with superstitions, such as that Jonah lived in the belly of a fish for forty days and then he got free only by reciting a verse, or that your Lord has offspring)

37:150

Saheeh International

Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"

Wahiduddin Khan

Did We create the angels females, to which they were witnesses

Shabbir Ahmed

Or is it that We have created angels female and they witnessed it

37:151

Saheeh International

Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,

Wahiduddin Khan

No indeed! It is one of their fabrications when they say

Shabbir Ahmed

Attention! It is out of their own invention that they say

37:152

Saheeh International

"Allāh has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.

Wahiduddin Khan

God has begotten children." They are truly liars

Shabbir Ahmed

That Allah has begotten." And, verily, they tell a lie too

37:153

Saheeh International

Has He chosen daughters over sons?

Wahiduddin Khan

Has He chosen daughters over sons

Shabbir Ahmed

When they say, "He has chosen daughters over sons

37:154

Saheeh International

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

Wahiduddin Khan

What is the matter with you? How do you form your judgement

Shabbir Ahmed

What is amiss with you? How do you judge

37:155

Saheeh International

Then will you not be reminded?

Wahiduddin Khan

Will you not then reflect

Shabbir Ahmed

Will you not then reflect

37:156

Saheeh International

Or do you have a clear authority?

Wahiduddin Khan

Or have you clear evidence

Shabbir Ahmed

Or have you a clear authoritative evidence

37:157

Saheeh International

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

Wahiduddin Khan

Then produce your scriptures, if you are telling the truth

Shabbir Ahmed

Then bring your Divine Authority if you are truthful

37:158

Saheeh International

And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].

Wahiduddin Khan

They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be produced before Him [for judgement]

Shabbir Ahmed

And they imagine relationship between the unseen forces and their Lord. But the unseen forces know their assignments and constantly remain in His servitude

37:159

Saheeh International

Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,

Wahiduddin Khan

God is far above what they attribute to Him

Shabbir Ahmed

Glorified is Allah from what they attribute to Him

37:160

Saheeh International

Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].

Wahiduddin Khan

but not so the true servants of God

Shabbir Ahmed

But the sincere servants of Allah

37:161

Saheeh International

So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

Wahiduddin Khan

neither you nor what you worship

Shabbir Ahmed

Verily, neither you nor what you worship

37:162

Saheeh International

You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

Wahiduddin Khan

can lure away from God any

Shabbir Ahmed

Can tempt the sincere servants against Him

37:163

Saheeh International

Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.

Wahiduddin Khan

except those who will burn in Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

Only the one who rushes to the Blazing Fire

37:164

Saheeh International

[The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.

Wahiduddin Khan

[The angels say], "Every single one of us has his place assigned

Shabbir Ahmed

The sincere servants say, "Each one of us has an assignment

37:165

Saheeh International

And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

Wahiduddin Khan

we are those who stand ranged in ranks

Shabbir Ahmed

And, behold, we are soldiers in ranks

37:166

Saheeh International

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."

Wahiduddin Khan

We glorify God

Shabbir Ahmed

And, verily, we, yes we are they who strive to establish His Glory on earth. ('Sabh' = Swim with long and strong laps and strides. It is not the rolling of the rosary-beads or to hymn some words)

37:167

Saheeh International

And indeed, they [i.e., the disbelievers] used to say,

Wahiduddin Khan

They say

Shabbir Ahmed

And indeed the disbelievers used to say

37:168

Saheeh International

"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

Wahiduddin Khan

If we had had with us a Book like that of the people of old

Shabbir Ahmed

If only we had a reminder from the old generations, or a Scripture as they had

37:169

Saheeh International

We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."

Wahiduddin Khan

we would surely have been God's chosen servants

Shabbir Ahmed

We would certainly be sincere servants of Allah alone

37:170

Saheeh International

But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know.

Wahiduddin Khan

but they have rejected it, [the Quran] and they shall soon learn

Shabbir Ahmed

And yet, now they are denying the Truth. In time, they will come to know what they denied

37:171

Saheeh International

And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

Wahiduddin Khan

And surely Our word has gone forth respecting Our servants, the messengers

Shabbir Ahmed

Our Word has already gone forth to Our servants, the Messengers

37:172

Saheeh International

[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

Wahiduddin Khan

that it is certainly they who will be helped

Shabbir Ahmed

That verily, they - indeed they - would be helped

37:173

Saheeh International

And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.

Wahiduddin Khan

and that it is Our host that would certainly triumph

Shabbir Ahmed

And that Our soldiers - they indeed - would be the victors

37:174

Saheeh International

So, [O Muḥammad], leave them for a time.

Wahiduddin Khan

So turn away from them for a while

Shabbir Ahmed

So (O Prophet) withdraw from the disbelievers for a while

37:175

Saheeh International

And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

Wahiduddin Khan

Watch them: they will soon see

Shabbir Ahmed

And see them for what they do, and soon they will see what they now don't

37:176

Saheeh International

Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

Wahiduddin Khan

Do they really wish to hasten Our punishment

Shabbir Ahmed

Do they really wish to hasten Our retribution

37:177

Saheeh International

But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

Wahiduddin Khan

When it descends on their courtyards, how terrible that morning will be for those who were warned

Shabbir Ahmed

But when it comes upon their front-yards, it will be a dreadful awakening for those who have been sufficiently warned

37:178

Saheeh International

And leave them for a time.

Wahiduddin Khan

So turn away from them for a while

Shabbir Ahmed

Hence, turn aside from them for a while

37:179

Saheeh International

And see, for they are going to see.

Wahiduddin Khan

And watch, for they will soon see

Shabbir Ahmed

And see them for what they do, and soon they will see what they now don't

37:180

Saheeh International

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

Wahiduddin Khan

Glory be to your Lord: the Lord of Glory is far above what they attribute to Him

Shabbir Ahmed

Glory to your Lord, the Lord of Majesty, Exalted above their contriving

37:181

Saheeh International

And peace upon the messengers.

Wahiduddin Khan

Peace be upon the Messengers

Shabbir Ahmed

And Peace and salutation to all the Message-bearers

37:182

Saheeh International

And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

Wahiduddin Khan

and praise be to God, the Lord of all the Worlds

Shabbir Ahmed

And all Praise is due to Allah, the Sustainer of the Worlds! (And to that end strive the Soldiers in Ranks)
