بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

69:1

ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ

Saheeh International

The Inevitable Reality -

69:2

مَا ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ

Saheeh International

What is the Inevitable Reality?

Wahiduddin Khan

What is the Inevitable Hour

Shabbir Ahmed

How awesome is the Inevitable Reality

69:3

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ

Saheeh International

And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?

Wahiduddin Khan

And what will make you realize what the Inevitable Hour is

Shabbir Ahmed

Ah, what can give you an idea what the Inevitable Reality is

69:4

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ وَعَادُۢ بِٱلۡقَارِعَةِ

Saheeh International

Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].

Wahiduddin Khan

The tribes of Thamud and 'Ad denied that disaster would strike them

Shabbir Ahmed

Thamud and Aad denied the oncoming Uproar

69:5

فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهۡلِكُواْ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ

Saheeh International

So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].

Wahiduddin Khan

the Thamud were destroyed by a terrible storm of thunder and lightning

Shabbir Ahmed

As for Thamud, they were destroyed by a thunderous blast

69:6

وَأَمَّا عَادࣱ فَأُهۡلِكُواْ بِرِيحࣲ صَرۡصَرٍ عَاتِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And as for ʿAad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind

Wahiduddin Khan

and the 'Ad were destroyed by a furious wind

Shabbir Ahmed

And as for Aad, they were annihilated with raging hurricane winds

69:7

سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ سَبۡعَ لَيَالࣲ وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومࣰ اۖ فَتَرَى ٱلۡقَوۡمَ فِيهَا صَرۡعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلٍ خَاوِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Which He [i.e., Allāh] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.

Wahiduddin Khan

which God let loose against them for seven nights and eight days unremittingly, so that you could have seen its people lying prostrate as though they were the hollow trunks of palm-trees which had fallen down

Shabbir Ahmed

Which He made it rage upon them for seven long nights and eight long days. Such that you could imagine those people as uprooted hollow palm-trunks

69:8

فَهَلۡ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Then do you see of them any remains?

Wahiduddin Khan

Do you see any vestige left of them now

Shabbir Ahmed

Now, can you see any remnants of them

69:9

وَجَآءَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَن قَبۡلَهُۥ وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَٰتُ بِٱلۡخَاطِئَةِ

Saheeh International

And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin.

Wahiduddin Khan

Pharoah and those before him and the inhabitants of the overthrown cities persistently committed grave sins

Shabbir Ahmed

And there came Pharaoh, and many others before him, and the townships that were overthrown. All of them committed fault upon fault

69:10

فَعَصَوۡاْ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ أَخۡذَةࣰ رَّابِيَةً

Saheeh International

And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].

Wahiduddin Khan

They defied their Lord's messenger, so He seized them with an ever-tightening grip

Shabbir Ahmed

For, they disobeyed the respective Messenger of their Lord. Consequently, He grasped them with a firm grasp

69:11

إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلۡمَآءُ حَمَلۡنَٰكُمۡ فِي ٱلۡجَارِيَةِ

Saheeh International

Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship

Wahiduddin Khan

But We bore you away in the Ark, when the waters rose high

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold! When waters topped the levels, We carried you upon the watercraft

69:12

لِنَجۡعَلَهَا لَكُمۡ تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنࣱ وَٰعِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.

Wahiduddin Khan

so that We might make it a reminder for you and so that attentive ears might retain it

Shabbir Ahmed

(These events are conveyed to you) so that We might make it a lesson for you, and that any attentive ear might take it to memory

69:13

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ نَفۡخَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Then when the Horn is blown with one blast

Wahiduddin Khan

When a single blast is blown on the trumpet

Shabbir Ahmed

Hence, think when the Trumpet will be sounded with a single Blast

69:14

وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ‏

Saheeh International

And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -

Wahiduddin Khan

and the earth and the mountains are lifted up and then crushed with a single blow

Shabbir Ahmed

And the earth will be moved and the mountains, and struck with a stroke

69:15

فَيَوۡمَئِذࣲ وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ

Saheeh International

Then on that Day, the Occurrence [i.e., Resurrection] will occur,

Wahiduddin Khan

on that Day the Great Event will come to pass

Shabbir Ahmed

Then, on that Day when the Episode will come to pass

69:16

وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَهِيَ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ وَاهِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.

Wahiduddin Khan

And the sky will be rent asunder, for on that Day it will be so frail

Shabbir Ahmed

And when the sky will be rent asunder, such that frail will it be that Day

69:17

وَٱلۡمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرۡجَآئِهَاۚ وَيَحۡمِلُ عَرۡشَ رَبِّكَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ ثَمَٰنِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].

Wahiduddin Khan

The angels will appear by its sides and, on that Day, eight [angels] will bear your Lord's throne above them

Shabbir Ahmed

And the Divine Laws in Nature will rally around and your Lord's Supreme Control will reign over eight Universes that Day. (Instead of the current seven)

69:18

يَوۡمَئِذࣲ تُعۡرَضُونَ لَا تَخۡفَىٰ مِنكُمۡ خَافِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.

Wahiduddin Khan

On that Day you will be brought to judgement and none of your secrets will remain hidden

Shabbir Ahmed

On the Day you will be brought, not a single hidden deed of yours will remain hidden

69:19

فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ هَآؤُمُ ٱقۡرَءُواْ كِتَٰبِيَهۡ

Saheeh International

So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!

Wahiduddin Khan

Then he who is given his record in his right hand will exclaim, "Here is my record, read it

Shabbir Ahmed

Then he who is given his record in his right hand, will say, "Come all of you around! Read this my record

69:20

إِنِّي ظَنَنتُ أَنِّي مُلَٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهۡ

Saheeh International

Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."

Wahiduddin Khan

Surely, I knew that I should meet my reckoning

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, I always thought that my account would be given to me

69:21

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةࣲ رَّاضِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

So he will be in a pleasant life -

Wahiduddin Khan

so he will live in a state of Bliss

Shabbir Ahmed

Then he will be in a state of Bliss

69:22

فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

In an elevated garden,

Wahiduddin Khan

in a lofty garden

Shabbir Ahmed

In a lofty Garden

69:23

قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.

Wahiduddin Khan

with clusters of fruit within easy reach

Shabbir Ahmed

With its fruit at hand

69:24

كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَآ أَسۡلَفۡتُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأَيَّامِ ٱلۡخَالِيَةِ

Saheeh International

[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past."

Wahiduddin Khan

We shall say to him, "Eat and drink joyfully as a reward for the good deeds you did in days gone by

Shabbir Ahmed

Eat and drink gleefully for what you did in the days past

69:25

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي لَمۡ أُوتَ كِتَٰبِيَهۡ

Saheeh International

But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record

Wahiduddin Khan

But he who is given his record in his left hand will say, "If only I had never been given my Record

Shabbir Ahmed

But as for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I was never given my record

69:26

وَلَمۡ أَدۡرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهۡ

Saheeh International

And had not known what is my account.

Wahiduddin Khan

and knew nothing of my reckoning

Shabbir Ahmed

And knew not my account

69:27

يَٰلَيۡتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلۡقَاضِيَةَ

Saheeh International

I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.

Wahiduddin Khan

How I wish my death had ended all

Shabbir Ahmed

Oh, could this be the end of me

69:28

مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنِّي مَالِيَهۡۜ

Saheeh International

My wealth has not availed me.

Wahiduddin Khan

My wealth has been of no use to me

Shabbir Ahmed

Of no help is my wealth

69:29

هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلۡطَٰنِيَهۡ

Saheeh International

Gone from me is my authority."

Wahiduddin Khan

I am bereft of power

Shabbir Ahmed

Vanquished is all my control

69:30

خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ

Saheeh International

[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.

Wahiduddin Khan

Seize him and fetter him

Shabbir Ahmed

Take him and shackle him! (Halt from further development)

69:31

ثُمَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ

Saheeh International

Then into Hellfire drive him.

Wahiduddin Khan

and then let him enter Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

And then hurl him in the blazing flame of his deeds

69:32

ثُمَّ فِي سِلۡسِلَةࣲ ذَرۡعُهَا سَبۡعُونَ ذِرَاعࣰ ا فَٱسۡلُكُوهُ

Saheeh International

Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."

Wahiduddin Khan

Then fasten him with a chain seventy cubits long

Shabbir Ahmed

And then make him a link in the very long chain of people like him. (Seventy cubits = Very long)

69:33

إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

Saheeh International

Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,

Wahiduddin Khan

for he did not believe in Almighty God

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, he failed to grace himself with faith in Allah, the Tremendous

69:34

وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ

Saheeh International

Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.

Wahiduddin Khan

nor did he feel any urge to feed the needy

Shabbir Ahmed

And arranged not to feed the needy

69:35

فَلَيۡسَ لَهُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ هَٰهُنَا حَمِيمࣱ‏

Saheeh International

So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend

Wahiduddin Khan

so today he has no friend here

Shabbir Ahmed

And so, he has no friend here today

69:36

وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنۡ غِسۡلِينࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;

Wahiduddin Khan

and the only food he has is filth

Shabbir Ahmed

Nor any food but the discarded shreds he gave to others

69:37

لَّا يَأۡكُلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡخَٰطِـُٔونَ

Saheeh International

None will eat it except the sinners.

Wahiduddin Khan

which no one will eat except the sinners

Shabbir Ahmed

Which none eat but those who faulted through life

69:38

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَا تُبۡصِرُونَ

Saheeh International

So I swear by what you see

Wahiduddin Khan

But nay, I swear by all that you can see

Shabbir Ahmed

But nay, I call to witness all that you see (that actions have consequences of their like)

69:39

وَمَا لَا تُبۡصِرُونَ

Saheeh International

And what you do not see

Wahiduddin Khan

as well as all that you cannot see

Shabbir Ahmed

And all that you see not (the subtle progression of the Law of Requital)

69:40

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولࣲ كَرِيمࣲ‏

Saheeh International

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the word of a noble Messenger.

Wahiduddin Khan

most surely, this is the word brought by a noble messenger

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, this is indeed the revealed Word in the dialect of a noble Messenger

69:41

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَاعِرࣲۚ قَلِيلࣰ ا مَّا تُؤۡمِنُونَ

Saheeh International

And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.

Wahiduddin Khan

it is not the word of a poet -- how little you believe

Shabbir Ahmed

This is not the speech of a poet. Seldom do you reach conviction

69:42

وَلَا بِقَوۡلِ كَاهِنࣲۚ قَلِيلࣰ ا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Saheeh International

Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.

Wahiduddin Khan

Nor is it the word of a soothsayer -- how little you reflect

Shabbir Ahmed

Nor is it the word of a soothsayer. Little of your intellect do you bring to use

69:43

تَنزِيلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Saheeh International

[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

Wahiduddin Khan

It is a revelation sent down by the Sustainer of the Universe

Shabbir Ahmed

It is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds

69:44

وَلَوۡ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيۡنَا بَعۡضَ ٱلۡأَقَاوِيلِ

Saheeh International

And if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,

Wahiduddin Khan

if he had invented any lies about Us

Shabbir Ahmed

And if he had ascribed his sayings unto Us

69:45

لَأَخَذۡنَا مِنۡهُ بِٱلۡيَمِينِ

Saheeh International

We would have seized him by the right hand;

Wahiduddin Khan

We would indeed have seized him by his right hand

Shabbir Ahmed

We would have taken him by the right hand

69:46

ثُمَّ لَقَطَعۡنَا مِنۡهُ ٱلۡوَتِينَ

Saheeh International

Then We would have cut from him the aorta.

Wahiduddin Khan

and would indeed have cut his life-vein

Shabbir Ahmed

And would have cut off his Aorta

69:47

فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنۡ أَحَدٍ عَنۡهُ حَٰجِزِينَ

Saheeh International

And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him.

Wahiduddin Khan

and none of you could have held Us off from him

Shabbir Ahmed

And none of you could stop Us from doing that

69:48

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذۡكِرَةࣱ لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ

Saheeh International

And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder for the righteous.

Wahiduddin Khan

And surely it is an admonition to the God-fearing

Shabbir Ahmed

But, verily, it is a Reminder and a giver of eminence to those who wish to walk aright

69:49

وَإِنَّا لَنَعۡلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ

Saheeh International

And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.

Wahiduddin Khan

We know very well that there are some among you who reject Our signs

Shabbir Ahmed

And behold, We know well that among you will be deniers

69:50

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَسۡرَةٌ عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Saheeh International

And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers.

Wahiduddin Khan

it will be a source of bitter regret for those who deny the truth

Shabbir Ahmed

And behold, this denial will become a source of regret for the rejecters

69:51

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلۡيَقِينِ

Saheeh International

And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.

Wahiduddin Khan

it is the indubitable truth

Shabbir Ahmed

For, verily, it is Truth Absolute

69:52

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

Saheeh International

So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

Wahiduddin Khan

So glorify the name of your Lord, the Almighty

Shabbir Ahmed

Therefore, work hard to manifest the Glory of your Lord's Tremendous Name
