54. Al-Qamar

The Moon · Meccan · 55 verses · Revelation order 37

القمر

The Surah takes its name from the very first verse Wan shaqq al-Qamar, thereby implying that it is a Surah in which the word al-Qamar has occurred.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

54:1

ٱقۡتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلۡقَمَرُ

Saheeh International

The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].

Wahiduddin Khan

The Last Hour draws near and the moon is split asunder

Shabbir Ahmed

The Hour of Revolution is fast approaching. And the moon bearing banner is torn asunder

54:2

وَإِن يَرَوۡاْ ءَايَةࣰ يُعۡرِضُواْ وَيَقُولُواْ سِحۡرࣱ مُّسۡتَمِرࣱّ‏

Saheeh International

And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."

Wahiduddin Khan

Yet, when they see a sign they [who deny the truth] turn their backs and say, "The same old sorcery

Shabbir Ahmed

But if they see a Sign of the oncoming Change, they turn away and say, "A persistent bewilderment

54:3

وَكَذَّبُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚ وَكُلُّ أَمۡرࣲ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ‏

Saheeh International

And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.

Wahiduddin Khan

They deny the truth and follow their own whims, every matter has its appointed time

Shabbir Ahmed

For they adamantly belie the Truth and follow their desires. Yet, everything moves to its destination in stages

54:4

وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزۡدَجَرٌ

Saheeh International

And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.

Wahiduddin Khan

there has come to them many a tiding wherein there are warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

And indeed, there has come unto them news sufficient to deter them from arrogance

54:5

حِكۡمَةُۢ بَٰلِغَةࣱۖ فَمَا تُغۡنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ

Saheeh International

Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them].

Wahiduddin Khan

profound in wisdom, but all warnings have been of no avail

Shabbir Ahmed

And profound Wisdom! But all the warnings have been of no avail

54:6

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡۘ يَوۡمَ يَدۡعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَيۡءࣲ نُّكُرٍ

Saheeh International

So leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding,

Wahiduddin Khan

so ignore them. On the Day when the Crier will call out about a horrible event

Shabbir Ahmed

Therefore, (O Messenger) Ignore them for a while. The Day is coming when the caller will call them to a thing they have not conceived. (Shackles of captivity following the battle when they come to attack the believers)

54:7

خُشَّعًا أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمۡ جَرَادࣱ مُّنتَشِرࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,

Wahiduddin Khan

with downcast eyes they shall come out of their graves, as if they were locusts milling about

Shabbir Ahmed

They will come forth from their places of rest like a swarm of locusts, but will be thoroughly dispersed with their eyes downcast

54:8

مُّهۡطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِۖ يَقُولُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوۡمٌ عَسِرࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."

Wahiduddin Khan

hastening towards the Crier. Those who deny the truth will cry, "This is such a hard day

Shabbir Ahmed

Running in bewilderment toward the caller, the same deniers will then exclaim, "This is an awful day

54:9

۞كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ فَكَذَّبُواْ عَبۡدَنَا وَقَالُواْ مَجۡنُونࣱ وَٱزۡدُجِرَ

Saheeh International

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.

Wahiduddin Khan

The people of Noah denied [the truth] before them. They belied Our messenger saying, "He is mad!" He was rebuffed

Shabbir Ahmed

Long before them, Noah's people had belied the Message, and belied Our servant and said, "Madman", and he was rebuked

54:10

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّي مَغۡلُوبࣱ فَٱنتَصِرۡ

Saheeh International

So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."

Wahiduddin Khan

so he cried out to his Lord, saying, "I am overcome, so help me

Shabbir Ahmed

Thereupon he cried unto his Lord, "I am suppressed. Do help me, then

54:11

فَفَتَحۡنَآ أَبۡوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءࣲ مُّنۡهَمِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

Wahiduddin Khan

So We opened the gates of the sky with water pouring down in torrents

Shabbir Ahmed

And so, We opened the gates of the heaven pouring down torrents of water

54:12

وَفَجَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ عُيُونࣰ ا فَٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمۡرࣲ قَدۡ قُدِرَ

Saheeh International

And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.

Wahiduddin Khan

and We caused the earth to burst with gushing springs: so that the waters met for a purpose which had been decreed

Shabbir Ahmed

And caused the earth to gush forth springs so that the waters met together in due measure as decreed

54:13

وَحَمَلۡنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلۡوَٰحࣲ وَدُسُرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,

Wahiduddin Khan

We bore him on an [ark] which, made of planks and nails

Shabbir Ahmed

And We carried him on a watercraft made of mere planks and nails

54:14

تَجۡرِي بِأَعۡيُنِنَا جَزَآءࣰ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ

Saheeh International

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.

Wahiduddin Khan

floated on under Our eyes: a vindication of him who had been rejected

Shabbir Ahmed

And it floated before Our eyes, a reward for him who had been denied with ingratitude

54:15

وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَٰهَآ ءَايَةࣰ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?

Wahiduddin Khan

We have left this as a sign: but will anyone take heed

Shabbir Ahmed

And verily, We left this event as a lesson. Then, is there any who will learn

54:16

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Saheeh International

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

How terrible then was My punishment and My warning

Shabbir Ahmed

Then see how was My Requital after My warnings

54:17

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Wahiduddin Khan

We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran. Is there anyone who would receive admonition

Shabbir Ahmed

And indeed, We have made the Qur'an easy to understand. Then, is there any who will learn

54:18

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادࣱ فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Saheeh International

ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

The people of 'Ad too rejected the truth. How terrible was My punishment and My warning

Shabbir Ahmed

The tribe of Aad had also belied the Message. Then see how was My retribution after My warnings

54:19

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحࣰ ا صَرۡصَرࣰ ا فِي يَوۡمِ نَحۡسࣲ مُّسۡتَمِرࣲّ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,

Wahiduddin Khan

We sent a raging wind against them on a day of continuous calamity

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, We sent raging winds upon them on a day of relentless misery

54:20

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلࣲ مُّنقَعِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Extracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.

Wahiduddin Khan

It swept people away as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees

Shabbir Ahmed

Tossing people around like empty, uprooted palm-trunks

54:21

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Saheeh International

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

How [dreadful] was My punishment and My warning

Shabbir Ahmed

Then see how was My retribution after My warnings

54:22

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Wahiduddin Khan

We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: is there anyone who would receive admonition

Shabbir Ahmed

And indeed, We have made the Qur'an easy to understand. Then, is there any who will learn

54:23

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

Saheeh International

Thamūd denied the warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

The tribe of Thamud also rejected Our warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

Thamud also rejected the warnings. (Thamud and Saleh (7:73-79), (11:61-68), (26:1)

54:24

فَقَالُوٓاْ أَبَشَرࣰ ا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدࣰ ا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذࣰ ا لَّفِي ضَلَٰلࣲ وَسُعُرٍ

Saheeh International

And said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

Wahiduddin Khan

they said, "Are we to follow a man from amongst ourselves? We would surely then fall into error and madness

Shabbir Ahmed

And they said, "What! A human being! Shall we follow a man among us while he has no party with him? Behold, we then, shall fall into error and loss

54:25

أَءُلۡقِيَ ٱلذِّكۡرُ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا بَلۡ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."

Wahiduddin Khan

Has the [Divine] message been revealed to him alone of all of us? No, he is a boastful liar

Shabbir Ahmed

Why - Has the Message been given to him alone among us? Nay, but he is a flagrant liar

54:26

سَيَعۡلَمُونَ غَدࣰ ا مَّنِ ٱلۡكَذَّابُ ٱلۡأَشِرُ

Saheeh International

They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.

Wahiduddin Khan

[We said to him] "Tomorrow they shall know who is the boastful liar

Shabbir Ahmed

Ah! They will come to know on the morrow who the flagrant liar is

54:27

إِنَّا مُرۡسِلُواْ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتۡنَةࣰ لَّهُمۡ فَٱرۡتَقِبۡهُمۡ وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ

Saheeh International

Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

Wahiduddin Khan

for We are [going to] send the she-camel as a trial for them, so watch them and be patient

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, We are sending the she-camel as a test for them. So watch them (O Saleh) and hold yourself in patience

54:28

وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ أَنَّ ٱلۡمَآءَ قِسۡمَةُۢ بَيۡنَهُمۡۖ كُلُّ شِرۡبࣲ مُّحۡتَضَرࣱ‏

Saheeh International

And inform them that the water is shared between them, each [day of] drink attended [by turn].

Wahiduddin Khan

And tell them that the water [of the well] is to be divided between them, and that each one should drink in turn

Shabbir Ahmed

And let them know that the water must be shared by all. Every drinking will be witnessed. (The she-camel was a symbol of obedience for them)

54:29

فَنَادَوۡاْ صَاحِبَهُمۡ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

Saheeh International

But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her].

Wahiduddin Khan

But they called their companion who took a sword and hamstrung her

Shabbir Ahmed

But they called their (most forward) comrade and he took charge and killed her

54:30

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Saheeh International

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

How [terrible] were My punishment and My warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

Then see how was My retribution after My warnings

54:31

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ صَيۡحَةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ فَكَانُواْ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلۡمُحۡتَظِرِ

Saheeh International

Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.

Wahiduddin Khan

Then We sent a single blast against them and they became like dry stubble which has been trampled upon

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, We sent upon them a single mighty Blast whereupon they crumbled to chaff

54:32

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Wahiduddin Khan

Indeed, We have made the Quran easy to learn lessons from. Is there anyone who would receive admonition

Shabbir Ahmed

And indeed, We have made the Qur'an easy to understand. Then, is there any who will learn

54:33

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطِۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

Saheeh International

The people of Lot denied the warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

The people of Lot rejected Our warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

Lot's folk rejected warnings

54:34

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطࣲۖ نَّجَّيۡنَٰهُم بِسَحَرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot - We saved them before dawn.

Wahiduddin Khan

We sent a sandstorm against them which destroyed them all, except the family of Lot, whom We saved at the break of dawn

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, We sent a storm of fiery stones on them, except the family of Lot whom We saved at dawn

54:35

نِّعۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِنَاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي مَن شَكَرَ

Saheeh International

As favor from Us. Thus do We reward he who is grateful.

Wahiduddin Khan

as a blessing from Us: this is how We reward the thankful

Shabbir Ahmed

As a Bliss from Us. Thus it is, We reward the grateful

54:36

وَلَقَدۡ أَنذَرَهُم بَطۡشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوۡاْ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

Saheeh International

And he had already warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

Lot warned them of Our punishment, but they disputed the warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

For he had truly warned them of Our Grasp, but they contended about the warning

54:37

وَلَقَدۡ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيۡفِهِۦ فَطَمَسۡنَآ أَعۡيُنَهُمۡ فَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Saheeh International

And they had demanded from him his guests, but We obliterated their eyes, [saying], "Taste My punishment and warning."

Wahiduddin Khan

they even wanted to seduce his guests -- but We blinded them, and said, "Taste My punishment now that you have scorned My warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

And demanded that he give up his guests. Whereupon We sealed their vision. Taste now My punishment after the warnings

54:38

وَلَقَدۡ صَبَّحَهُم بُكۡرَةً عَذَابࣱ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ‏

Saheeh International

And there came upon them by morning an abiding punishment.

Wahiduddin Khan

and early in the morning the punishment decreed overtook them

Shabbir Ahmed

And indeed, the inevitable punishment befell them early in the morning

54:39

فَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Saheeh International

So taste My punishment and warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

Taste My punishment now that you have scorned My warnings

Shabbir Ahmed

Now taste My retribution after My warnings

54:40

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Wahiduddin Khan

We have made it easy indeed to learn lessons from the Quran. Is there anyone who would receive admonition

Shabbir Ahmed

And behold, We have made the Qur'an easy to understand. Then, is there any who will learn

54:41

وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ

Saheeh International

And there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning.

Wahiduddin Khan

Surely warners came to the people of Pharaoh

Shabbir Ahmed

And warnings came indeed to Pharaoh's people

54:42

كَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُمۡ أَخۡذَ عَزِيزࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرٍ

Saheeh International

They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.

Wahiduddin Khan

They, too, rejected all Our signs. So We seized them with the seizure of One Mighty, Omnipotent

Shabbir Ahmed

They, too, denied Our Messages, every one. Thereupon We grasped them with the grasp of the Mighty, the Powerful

54:43

أَكُفَّارُكُمۡ خَيۡرࣱ مِّنۡ أُوْلَٰٓئِكُمۡ أَمۡ لَكُم بَرَآءَةࣱ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ

Saheeh International

Are your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scriptures?

Wahiduddin Khan

Are your people who deny the truth better than those? Or have you been given immunity in the Scriptures

Shabbir Ahmed

Are your deniers better than those others, or do you have some amnesty in the Scriptures

54:44

أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ نَحۡنُ جَمِيعࣱ مُّنتَصِرࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Or do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?

Wahiduddin Khan

Or do they say, "We are a united group, and we are bound to prevail

Shabbir Ahmed

Or do they say, "We are a group united bound to be victorious

54:45

سَيُهۡزَمُ ٱلۡجَمۡعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ

Saheeh International

[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].

Wahiduddin Khan

The hosts shall soon be routed and they shall be put to flight

Shabbir Ahmed

Yet, all these troops will be routed and will turn back and flee

54:46

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوۡعِدُهُمۡ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ

Saheeh International

But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.

Wahiduddin Khan

Indeed, the Hour of Doom is their appointed time, and the Last Hour will be the most severe, and the most bitter

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, the Hour is the time promised them, and that Hour will be most grievous with a most bitter defeat

54:47

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ فِي ضَلَٰلࣲ وَسُعُرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness..

Wahiduddin Khan

The evil-doers are indeed sunk in error and folly

Shabbir Ahmed

The violators of human rights are in grave error and loss

54:48

يَوۡمَ يُسۡحَبُونَ فِي ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمۡ ذُوقُواْ مَسَّ سَقَرَ

Saheeh International

The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces [it will be said], "Taste the touch of Saqar."

Wahiduddin Khan

on the Day when they are dragged into the fire on their faces, it will be said to them, "Now feel the touch of Hell

Shabbir Ahmed

On the Day when they shall be dragged through the Fire on their faces, "Taste you the touch of Blaze!" ('Wajh' = Face = Countenance = Whole being = Total personality)

54:49

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَٰهُ بِقَدَرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, all things We created with predestination.

Wahiduddin Khan

We have created everything in due measure

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, We have created all things in due measure and proportion. (And appointed Laws so that all things become what they are meant to be)

54:50

وَمَآ أَمۡرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةࣱ كَلَمۡحِۭ بِٱلۡبَصَرِ

Saheeh International

And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.

Wahiduddin Khan

We command but once: Our will is done in the twinkling of an eye

Shabbir Ahmed

And Our Command is but a single Word, like the twinkling of an eye

54:51

وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشۡيَاعَكُمۡ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And We have already destroyed your kinds, so is there any who will remember?

Wahiduddin Khan

We have indeed destroyed many a people like you. Is there anyone who would receive admonition

Shabbir Ahmed

And often in the past We have annihilated gangs like you. Then, is there any who will learn

54:52

وَكُلُّ شَيۡءࣲ فَعَلُوهُ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ

Saheeh International

And everything they did is in written records.

Wahiduddin Khan

All their deeds are recorded in their books

Shabbir Ahmed

And everything they did is in the Scriptures

54:53

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرࣲ وَكَبِيرࣲ مُّسۡتَطَرٌ

Saheeh International

And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.

Wahiduddin Khan

every action, small or great, is noted down

Shabbir Ahmed

And everything, be it small or great, is recorded

54:54

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ وَنَهَرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers,

Wahiduddin Khan

The God-conscious will find themselves in gardens and rivers

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, those who walk aright will be in the midst of gardens and rivers

54:55

فِي مَقۡعَدِ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرِۭ

Saheeh International

In a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability.

Wahiduddin Khan

in the seat of truth with an all-powerful sovereign

Shabbir Ahmed

Seated honorably in the Presence of a Mighty King
