88. Al-Ghashiyah

The Overwhelming · Meccan · 26 verses · Revelation order 68

The Surah takes its name from the word al-ghishiyah in the first verse.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

88:1

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلۡغَٰشِيَةِ

Saheeh International

Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?

Wahiduddin Khan

Have you heard about the Overwhelming Event

Shabbir Ahmed

Has the news of the Dominating Event reached you

88:2

وُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذٍ خَٰشِعَةٌ

Saheeh International

[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,

Wahiduddin Khan

On that Day, there shall be downcast faces

Shabbir Ahmed

Some faces on that Day will be downcast

88:3

عَامِلَةࣱ نَّاصِبَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Working [hard] and exhausted.

Wahiduddin Khan

labouring, weary

Shabbir Ahmed

Laboring, exhausted. (They were in motion without action. They toiled without clear direction)

88:4

تَصۡلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةࣰ‏

Saheeh International

They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.

Wahiduddin Khan

they shall enter a burning Fire

Shabbir Ahmed

As they enter a sizzling Fire

88:5

تُسۡقَىٰ مِنۡ عَيۡنٍ ءَانِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

They will be given drink from a boiling spring.

Wahiduddin Khan

and will be made to drink from a boiling spring

Shabbir Ahmed

Given to drink from a spring of burning anguish

88:6

لَّيۡسَ لَهُمۡ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعࣲ‏

Saheeh International

For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

Wahiduddin Khan

they shall have no food but thorns

Shabbir Ahmed

No food for them but the bitterness of dry thorns (that they scattered to hurt others during their wayward journey through life)

88:7

لَّا يُسۡمِنُ وَلَا يُغۡنِي مِن جُوعࣲ‏

Saheeh International

Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

Wahiduddin Khan

which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger

Shabbir Ahmed

Which nourishes not, nor relieves hunger

88:8

وُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ نَّاعِمَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.

Wahiduddin Khan

Some faces on that Day will be radiant

Shabbir Ahmed

On that Day some faces will shine with Bliss

88:9

لِّسَعۡيِهَا رَاضِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

With their effort [they are] satisfied

Wahiduddin Khan

well pleased with the result of their striving

Shabbir Ahmed

Happy with the fruit of their effort

88:10

فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةࣲ‏

Saheeh International

In an elevated garden,

Wahiduddin Khan

in a sublime garden

Shabbir Ahmed

In a Garden exalted in honor

88:11

لَّا تَسۡمَعُ فِيهَا لَٰغِيَةࣰ‏

Saheeh International

Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.

Wahiduddin Khan

where they will hear no idle talk

Shabbir Ahmed

Wherein you hear not senseless speech

88:12

فِيهَا عَيۡنࣱ جَارِيَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Within it is a flowing spring.

Wahiduddin Khan

with a flowing spring

Shabbir Ahmed

Therein is an ever-flowing Spring of Grace

88:13

فِيهَا سُرُرࣱ مَّرۡفُوعَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

Within it are couches raised high

Wahiduddin Khan

raised couches

Shabbir Ahmed

Therein are thrones of honor

88:14

وَأَكۡوَابࣱ مَّوۡضُوعَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

And cups put in place

Wahiduddin Khan

and goblets set at hand

Shabbir Ahmed

And shiny glasses set at hand

88:15

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصۡفُوفَةࣱ‏

Saheeh International

And cushions lined up

Wahiduddin Khan

cushions ranged

Shabbir Ahmed

And cushions set in rows

88:16

وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبۡثُوثَةٌ

Saheeh International

And carpets spread around.

Wahiduddin Khan

and carpets spread out

Shabbir Ahmed

And silken carpets spread out

88:17

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡإِبِلِ كَيۡفَ خُلِقَتۡ

Saheeh International

Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?

Wahiduddin Khan

Do they never reflect on the camels and how they were created

Shabbir Ahmed

Will they not, then, look at: the water-laden clouds, how they are made

88:18

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيۡفَ رُفِعَتۡ

Saheeh International

And at the sky - how it is raised?

Wahiduddin Khan

and on the sky, how it is raised aloft

Shabbir Ahmed

And at the sky, how it is raised high? (Without visible pillars)

88:19

وَإِلَى ٱلۡجِبَالِ كَيۡفَ نُصِبَتۡ

Saheeh International

And at the mountains - how they are erected?

Wahiduddin Khan

and on the mountains, how they are firmly set up

Shabbir Ahmed

And at the mountains, how they are entrenched

88:20

وَإِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَيۡفَ سُطِحَتۡ

Saheeh International

And at the earth - how it is spread out?

Wahiduddin Khan

and on the earth, how it is spread out

Shabbir Ahmed

And at the earth, how it is spread out? (That you do not even feel the sphere, nor feel its speedy rotations (31:10), (39:5)

88:21

فَذَكِّرۡ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرࣱ‏

Saheeh International

So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.

Wahiduddin Khan

So, [O Prophet] exhort them: your task is only to exhort

Shabbir Ahmed

(This is some evidence, O Messenger!) Remind them, for you are one to remind

88:22

لَّسۡتَ عَلَيۡهِم بِمُصَيۡطِرٍ

Saheeh International

You are not over them a controller.

Wahiduddin Khan

you are not their keeper

Shabbir Ahmed

You are not a task master over them

88:23

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ

Saheeh International

However, he who turns away and disbelieves

Wahiduddin Khan

But whoever turns back and denies the truth

Shabbir Ahmed

But whoever turns away and denies the Truth

88:24

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرَ

Saheeh International

Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.

Wahiduddin Khan

will be punished by God with the greatest punishment

Shabbir Ahmed

Allah will requite him with a great requital

88:25

إِنَّ إِلَيۡنَآ إِيَابَهُمۡ

Saheeh International

Indeed, to Us is their return.

Wahiduddin Khan

Certainly, it is to Us that they will return

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, unto Us is their return

88:26

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا حِسَابَهُم

Saheeh International

Then indeed, upon Us is their account.

Wahiduddin Khan

Then, surely, it is for Us to call them to account

Shabbir Ahmed

Then it is for Us to call them to account
