89. Al-Fajr

The Dawn · Meccan · 30 verses · Revelation order 10

الفجر

The Surah is so designated after the word wal-fajr with which it opens.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

89:1

وَٱلۡفَجۡرِ

Saheeh International

By the dawn

Wahiduddin Khan

By the Dawn

Shabbir Ahmed

Witness is the Daybreak

89:2

وَلَيَالٍ عَشۡرࣲ‏

Saheeh International

And [by] ten nights

Wahiduddin Khan

by the Ten Nights

Shabbir Ahmed

And ten Nights

89:3

وَٱلشَّفۡعِ وَٱلۡوَتۡرِ

Saheeh International

And [by] the even [number] and the odd

Wahiduddin Khan

by the even and the odd

Shabbir Ahmed

And the Even and the Odd

89:4

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَسۡرِ

Saheeh International

And [by] the night when it passes,

Wahiduddin Khan

and by the passing night

Shabbir Ahmed

And Witness to the Truth is the departing of the Night of Ignorance

89:5

هَلۡ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمࣱ لِّذِي حِجۡرٍ

Saheeh International

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

Wahiduddin Khan

is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense

Shabbir Ahmed

Is not all this a solemn evidence for every thinking person

89:6

أَلَمۡ تَرَ كَيۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

Saheeh International

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -

Wahiduddin Khan

Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad

Shabbir Ahmed

Have you noted how your Lord dealt with Aad? (They had refused to see the Light)

89:7

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلۡعِمَادِ

Saheeh International

[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,

Wahiduddin Khan

the people of Iram, the city of many pillars

Shabbir Ahmed

Those whose capital was Iram, the city of towers and lofty mansions

89:8

ٱلَّتِي لَمۡ يُخۡلَقۡ مِثۡلُهَا فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ

Saheeh International

The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

Wahiduddin Khan

the like of which has never been created in the land

Shabbir Ahmed

The like of which (the towers and castles) were never built in other cities

89:9

وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُواْ ٱلصَّخۡرَ بِٱلۡوَادِ

Saheeh International

And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

Wahiduddin Khan

and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley

Shabbir Ahmed

And with Thamud, who slashed out for dwellings rocks in the valley. (Wadi)

89:10

وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ ذِي ٱلۡأَوۡتَادِ

Saheeh International

And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?

Wahiduddin Khan

and with Pharaoh of the stakes

Shabbir Ahmed

And with the powerful Pharaoh of the great Pyramids

89:11

ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوۡاْ فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ

Saheeh International

[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

Wahiduddin Khan

All of them committed excesses in their lands

Shabbir Ahmed

They all played God in the land, towns and cities

89:12

فَأَكۡثَرُواْ فِيهَا ٱلۡفَسَادَ

Saheeh International

And increased therein the corruption.

Wahiduddin Khan

and caused much corruption in them

Shabbir Ahmed

And increased corruption and crime therein

89:13

فَصَبَّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّكَ سَوۡطَ عَذَابٍ

Saheeh International

So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

Wahiduddin Khan

so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment

Shabbir Ahmed

And so, your Lord chastised them with a whipping punishment

89:14

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلۡمِرۡصَادِ

Saheeh International

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

Wahiduddin Khan

for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch

Shabbir Ahmed

Behold, your Lord is ever on the watch

89:15

فَأَمَّا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبۡتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكۡرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّيٓ أَكۡرَمَنِ

Saheeh International

And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

Wahiduddin Khan

As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me

Shabbir Ahmed

But as for man, whenever his Lord lets his life take a turn by giving him honor and Bliss, he says, "My Lord has honored me." (Honor or disgrace are subject to Divine Laws, and are not random phenomena)

89:16

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبۡتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيۡهِ رِزۡقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّيٓ أَهَٰنَنِ

Saheeh International

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

Wahiduddin Khan

but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me

Shabbir Ahmed

But when He lets his life take a turn by restricting his provision, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me

89:17

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا تُكۡرِمُونَ ٱلۡيَتِيمَ

Saheeh International

No! But you do not honor the orphan

Wahiduddin Khan

No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, nay, you honor not the orphan. (You forget to analyze what you do and what you do not do. 'Yatim' = Orphan= Widow = Solitary = Left alone in the society = The helpless. A benevolent society makes room for the 'Yatim)

89:18

وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ

Saheeh International

And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

Wahiduddin Khan

nor do you urge one another to feed the poor

Shabbir Ahmed

And you do not encourage one another to feed the needy. ('Miskin' = Poor = Needy = Whose life is stranded for any reason = Whose business has stalled = Who has lost his job = Whose life has been hampered by circumstances. 'Ta'm' = Feeding, includes taking care of all aspects of life. A benevolent collective order takes care of everyone)

89:19

وَتَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكۡلࣰ ا لَّمࣰّ ا

Saheeh International

And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,

Wahiduddin Khan

and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak

Shabbir Ahmed

And you devour the inheritances with greed

89:20

وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡمَالَ حُبࣰّ ا جَمࣰّ ا

Saheeh International

And you love wealth with immense love.

Wahiduddin Khan

and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied

Shabbir Ahmed

And you love wealth with boundless love

89:21

كَلَّآۖ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ دَكࣰّ ا دَكࣰّ ا

Saheeh International

No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed

Wahiduddin Khan

No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust

Shabbir Ahmed

Nay, when the earth is pounded, ground with a grinding

89:22

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلۡمَلَكُ صَفࣰّ ا صَفࣰّ ا

Saheeh International

And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,

Wahiduddin Khan

when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank

Shabbir Ahmed

And your Lord comes, and His angels, rank upon rank. (A great Revolution will come and the Divine System will be established. The Universal forces will line up to that end)

89:23

وَجِاْيٓءَ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بِجَهَنَّمَۚ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ

Saheeh International

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?

Wahiduddin Khan

and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him

Shabbir Ahmed

And Hell is brought close that Day. On that Day man will heed the Advisory, but of what avail will then be the remembrance

89:24

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَيَاتِي

Saheeh International

He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."

Wahiduddin Khan

He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life

Shabbir Ahmed

He will say, "Ah, I wish I had sent forth some good for my life

89:25

فَيَوۡمَئِذࣲ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدࣱ‏

Saheeh International

So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

Wahiduddin Khan

On that Day no one will punish as He punishes

Shabbir Ahmed

For, none chastises as He will chastise on that Day

89:26

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدࣱ‏

Saheeh International

And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

Wahiduddin Khan

and none can bind with bonds like His

Shabbir Ahmed

And none binds as He binds. (The logical result of disregarding the Creator's Guidance is getting bound by shackles of mental slavery)

89:27

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفۡسُ ٱلۡمُطۡمَئِنَّةُ

Saheeh International

[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,

Wahiduddin Khan

[But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace

Shabbir Ahmed

But Oh! You human being that has attained inner peace! (By living upright (1)

89:28

ٱرۡجِعِيٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةࣰ مَّرۡضِيَّةࣰ‏

Saheeh International

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

Wahiduddin Khan

return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing

Shabbir Ahmed

Return unto your Lord, pleased and Approved

89:29

فَٱدۡخُلِي فِي عِبَٰدِي

Saheeh International

And enter among My [righteous] servants

Wahiduddin Khan

Join My servants

Shabbir Ahmed

Enter, then, together with My servants

89:30

وَٱدۡخُلِي جَنَّتِي

Saheeh International

And enter My Paradise."

Wahiduddin Khan

Enter My Paradise

Shabbir Ahmed

Yes, enter you My Paradise
